Portola Statue Removed!Three and a half years after submitting our request to the State, CalTrans removed the Portola statue from its plinth along Highway 1 in Pacifica. The 8 July 2020 letter from the ARO to the State prompted the action and provides a precedent for the future removal of the Serra statue on I280, which awaits State approval of funding. The State's response to a request for the removal of a statue of a colonizer and initiated by a tribe is precedent setting. While we would have liked to return the statue to Spain with a not-so-kind note, CalTrans has other plans for its placement. December 1, 2023
